  {"id":469,"date":"2017-12-01T11:08:05","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T16:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nearnorthschools.ca\/almaguin\/?page_id=469"},"modified":"2023-08-10T09:47:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T13:47:52","slug":"graduation-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nearnorthschools.ca\/almaguin\/graduation-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduation Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (OSSD)<br \/>\nINFORMATION REGARDING SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To earn a high school diploma in Ontario, students must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>earn 18\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/high-school-graduation-requirements#section-1\">compulsory\u00a0credits<\/a><\/li>\n<li>earn 12\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/high-school-graduation-requirements#section-2\">optional\u00a0credits<\/a><\/li>\n<li>pass the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/high-school-graduation-requirements#section-3\">literacy\u00a0requirement<\/a><\/li>\n<li>earn at least two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/high-school-graduation-requirements#section-4\">online learning\u00a0credits<\/a><\/li>\n<li>complete a minimum of 40\u00a0hours of community involvement\u00a0activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Graduation Requirements<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Thirty credits<\/b>\u00a0are required for students to earn a secondary school graduation diploma.<\/p>\n<p>Students must earn the following\u00a0<b>18 compulsory credits:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 credits in English*<\/li>\n<li>3 credits in mathematics (at least 1 credit in grade 11 or 12)<\/li>\n<li>2 credits in science<\/li>\n<li>1 credit in French as a second language<\/li>\n<li>1 credit in Canadian history<\/li>\n<li>1 credit in Canadian geography<\/li>\n<li>1 credit in the arts (fine arts, drama, music, media)<\/li>\n<li>1 credit in health and physical education<\/li>\n<li>0.5 credit in civics<\/li>\n<li>0.5 credit in career studies<\/li>\n<li>1 additional credit in English (including the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course &#8211; OLC 4OE), French as a second language, Canadian and world studies, social sciences and humanities, guidance and career education, cooperative education**<strong>\u00a0(Group 1)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1 additional credit in French as a second language, art, business studies, health and physical education, cooperative education**\u00a0<strong>(Group 2)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>1 additional credit in French as a second language, science (Grade 11 or 12), computer studies,\u00a0technological education, cooperative education**<strong>\u00a0(Group 3)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the compulsory credits,<b> students must complete 12 optional credits.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section-3\">Literacy graduation requirement<\/h2>\n<p>Beginning September\u00a02022, the literacy graduation requirement is restored and students graduating in the 2022-23 school\u00a0year and beyond are required to meet this requirement.<\/p>\n<p>All students must meet the secondary school literacy graduation requirement to earn their high school\u00a0diploma.<\/p>\n<p>For most students, this means passing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eqao.com\/the-assessments\/osslt\/\">Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (<abbr>OSSLT<\/abbr>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students who do not successfully complete the\u00a0<abbr title=\"Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test\">OSSLT<\/abbr>\u00a0have other opportunities to meet the literacy graduation requirement. Students can contact their school principal to find out about these\u00a0options.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section-4\">Online learning graduation requirement<\/h2>\n<p>Beginning with students that entered Grade\u00a09 in the 2020-21 school year, students must earn at least two\u00a0online learning credits to get their Ontario Secondary School\u00a0Diploma.<\/p>\n<p>The online learning graduation requirement also applies to adult learners that will be entering the Ontario secondary school system starting in 2023-24 school\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<h3>Credits earned during COVID-19<\/h3>\n<p>Students can count\u00a0<strong>one<\/strong>\u00a0secondary school credit that was earned during the province wide school closures (from April\u00a02021 to June\u00a02021) towards the two online learning credits that they need to graduate. This applies to all Grade\u00a09 students who were learning remotely due to the province wide school\u00a0closures.<\/p>\n<h3>Opting out<\/h3>\n<p>Parents who wish to opt out or exempt their child from the online graduation requirement must complete the opt-out form available from their child\u2019s school board. Exemption from the online learning graduation requirements may be requested\u00a0by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the parent or guardian of the secondary\u00a0student<\/li>\n<li>students who are 18\u00a0years of age or\u00a0older<\/li>\n<li>students who are 16 or 17\u00a0years of age and have withdrawn from parental\u00a0control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"section-5\">Community involvement hours<\/h2>\n<p>Students are required to complete 40 hours of community involvement activities in order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (<abbr>OSSD<\/abbr>). Students working towards their\u00a0<abbr title=\"Ontairo Secondary School Diploma\">OSSD<\/abbr>\u00a0should make sure they meet these graduation requirements in time for their graduating\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p>Students can start accumulating their community involvement hours in the summer before entering Grade\u00a09.<\/p>\n<p>Students who are looking for community involvement opportunities\u00a0should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>make sure they know\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edu.gov.on.ca\/extra\/eng\/ppm\/124a.html\">which activities qualify for the community involvement\u00a0requirement<\/a><\/li>\n<li>check their school board\u2019s website for a list of eligible and ineligible activities, as well as, resources to help them record hours and find volunteer\u00a0activities<\/li>\n<li>visit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ovcn.ca\/\">Ontario Volunteer Centre Network<\/a>\u00a0to find opportunities through a centre in their\u00a0community<\/li>\n<li>ask their principal or guidance counsellor for more\u00a0information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If approved by your school\u2019s principal, students may count the following towards their community involvement hours:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>up to 10\u00a0hours of paid employment if a student is 14\u00a0years or older and completes a reflection exercise demonstrating how their work contributed to their\u00a0community<\/li>\n<li>community involvement during school time<\/li>\n<li>duties normally performed at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students under 18\u00a0years old should consult with their parents to plan and select their community involvement activities, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edu.gov.on.ca\/extra\/eng\/ppm\/124a.html\">ministry guidelines<\/a>. Students should also speak to their guidance counsellor about other ways their school could allow them to earn community involvement hours this\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p>The community involvement requirement is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop awareness and understanding about civic responsibility. Students can actively participate in supporting and strengthening their communities. It also provides the opportunity for students to learn more about themselves and possible career\u00a0opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>STUDENTS WHO DO NOT MEET THE OSSD REQUIREMENTS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE (OSSC) OR CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT OR <b>Certificate of Accomplishment (COA)<\/b><\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><b>Ontario Secondary School Certificate of Achievement (for students who started Grade 9 after September, 1999)\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nThe Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC)\u00a0will be granted on request to students who leave school before earning the Ontario Secondary School Diploma provided they have earned a minimum of 14 credits (distributed as follows):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>2 credits in English,<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>1 credit in Canadian geography,<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>1 credit in mathematics,<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>1 credit in science,<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>1 credit in health and physical education,<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>1 credit in the arts or technology<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>7 additional elective credits.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Certificate of Accomplishment\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nStudents who leave school before fulfilling the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the Ontario Secondary School Certificate may be granted a Certificate of Accomplishment (COA). This certificate may be a useful means of recognizing achievement for students who plan to take certain vocational programs or other kinds of further training.
