To increase awareness of the contribution they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities, and to develop a positive image and a greater sense of identity within their community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WHAT?<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li>Community involvement is a graduation requirement.<\/li>\n<li>It is a commitment of a minimum of 40 hours (it may be a variety of activities totalling 40 hrs).<\/li>\n<li>Students must not replace paid workers.<\/li>\n<li>Activities must be non-paid and out of class time, must not be part of a course and must not be court ordered.<\/li>\n<li>This is student directed. It is the student\u2019s responsibility to initiate the activity and agreement.<\/li>\n<li>A signed form must be submitted to Student Services which details the activity and number of hours earned (see last page).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WHEN?<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li>After school, at lunch, during spares, during school holidays, during summer vacation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ACCEPTABLE (ELIGIBLE) ACTIVITIES BY GROUP<\/p>\n<p><strong>A) \u00a0COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fundraising<br \/>\n\u00b7 Canvassing for organizations such as Heart &amp; Stroke Foundation, Cancer Society;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Walk-a-thons, special events and sales, auctions, bingos, 30 Hour Famine.<\/p>\n<p>Sports and Recreation<br \/>\n\u00b7 Coaching (e.g. soccer, gymnastics, skating), Special Olympics, pool assistant;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Assisting with tournaments, sports camps and clinics;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Timekeeping, scorekeeping, and refereeing.<\/p>\n<p>Community Events and Projects<br \/>\n\u00b7 Helping to organize the winter carnival, summer fairs, festivals and parades;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Food Bank, food drives, Meals on Wheels, 4H activities, seasonal events;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Shows and Sales, such as antiques and crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors\u2019 Residence Assistance<br \/>\n\u00b7 Serving snacks, helping with crafts, visiting, reading.<\/p>\n<p>Committees<br \/>\n\u00b7 Organizational role in: advisory board, neighbourhood associations, regional associations, School committees *SIMPLY BEING A MEMBER OF A COMMITTEE, CLUB OR ORGANIZATION IS NOT ELIGIBLE*<\/p>\n<p>Cultural and Religious Activities<br \/>\n\u00b7 Art gallery, playing music, library, museums, heritage site volunteer activities, special events, clerical tasks;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Sunday School, Youth Groups, Bible Camps;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Annual bazaars and dinners.<\/p>\n<p>Children and Youth Activities<br \/>\n\u00b7 Drop-in centers, breakfast programs, after school programs, Winter Break programs, summer playgrounds, summer camps, child care centers, after school programs, babysitting;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Tutoring younger students;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Big Brothers\/Sisters;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts;<br \/>\n\u00b7 YMCA.<\/p>\n<p>Assisting Individuals in the Community<br \/>\n\u00b7 Helping seniors shop;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Tutoring at a non-profit organization;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Chronic care visits;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Reading buddies;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Helping at hospitals and retirement homes;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Working with the handicapped;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Lawn maintenance and snow shoveling for seniors;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Shelters and food banks.<\/p>\n<p>Animal Care<br \/>\n\u00b7 Veterinary clinics, animal shelters, Humane Society.<\/p>\n<p>Clean-Up Programs<br \/>\n\u00b7 Tree planting;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Recycling programs;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Highway and parks clean-up projects<\/p>\n<p><strong>B) \u00a0SCHOOL NON-CREDIT EXTRACURRICULAR (must not be during class time)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Organizing and assisting with school activities such as:<br \/>\n\u00b7 Grade 9 welcome, students\u2019 council, school art shows, sports events, drama festival, fundraisers, food drive, parents\u2019 night;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Special events authorized by Student Services\/Principal;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Tutoring younger students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNACCEPTABLE (INELIGIBLE) ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Cooperative education requirements, any portion of a class or course, job shadowing, work experience;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that take place during time allotted for class during the school day;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities in a mining or logging environment when students are under 16 years of age;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities which take place in a workplace if the students is under 14 years of age;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities which take place in a factory if the student is under 15 years of age;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that involve administration of medication or medical procedures to other persons;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that involve the operation of a vehicle, power tools, or scaffolding;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that include the handling of hazardous materials or substances;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that require the knowledge of a tradesperson whose trade is regulated by the provincial government;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities that involve banking or the handling of securities, or other valuables;<br \/>\n\u00b7 Activities your parents would normally require you to do at home (i.e. daily chores);<br \/>\n\u00b7 Court ordered activities (e.g. community-service program for young offenders, probationary program).<\/p>\n<p>If a student proposes to undertake an activity that is not on the board\u2019s list of approved activities, the principal will determine whether the student\u2019s proposed activity is acceptable in consultation with the appropriate supervisory officer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADDITIONAL INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To View 17³Ô¹ÏÍø policies please visit the website at:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">www.nearnorthschools.ca<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To view the Almaguin Highlands Secondary School website please visit:<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u00a0www.nearnorthschools.ca\/almaguin\/<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Insurance:<br \/>\n\u00b7 The Board\u2019s liability insurance will protect the students and community sponsors for liability lawsuits for damages or injuries to a third party that may arise from the student\u2019s volunteer activities. The liability insurance does not cover negligence on behalf of the community sponsors involvement in the program. Sponsors are responsible for ensuring that their own liability insurance is in place.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li>Students are not covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board in the event of personal injury.<\/li>\n<li>It is expected that community sponsors will provide students with safety instructions, safety equipment if necessary, training and supervision.<\/li>\n<li>Students are encouraged to participate in the Student Insurance Plan which is part of their registration package in September.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The form will be available from the website soon.
