CHAMP stands for Chippewa Health, Athletic Management and Performance. This program has a strong history as a specialized Physical Education course designed to accommodate the rigorous training schedules of highly competitive athletes. We are very excited to expand this program into a Specialist High Skills Major program with increased course offerings and opportunities.

• The SHSM – Mining enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training.​
• The SHSM – Manufacturing provides students with a strong foundation for a wide variety of careers in the manufacturing sector, from those focusing on the service, repair, and modification of vehicles and vehicle systems to those related to the organization and management of manufacturing services and mass-transit systems.

The SHSM at West Ferris also includes key learning and experience necessary to become employed in the Mining Industry. Canada is one of the largest mining countries in the world, producing more than 60 minerals and metals, and making mining a major player in Canada’s economy.

Word Q is assistive technology software designed to help individuals who struggle with writing. WordQ uses word prediction to suggest words that the user is typing into documents and emails, helping with spelling. It also uses high-quality Acapela text-to-speech voices to read back text that the user has entered, allowing for proofreading and editing.

Students and teachers of the 17³Ô¹ÏÍø are permitted to download Word Q software. and use your Near North credentials to sign in.

This course broadens students’ understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. Students will apply methods for organizing and analysing large amounts of information; solve problems involving probability and statistics; and carry out a culminating investigation that integrates statistical concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. Students planning to enter university programs in business, the social sciences, and the humanities will find this course of particular interest.

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills in computer science. Students will use modular design principles to create complex and fully documented programs, according to industry standards. Student teams will manage a large software development project, from planning through to project review. Students will also analyse algorithms for effectiveness. They will investigate ethical issues in computing and further explore environmental issues, emerging technologies, areas of research in computer science, and careers in the field.

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills in computer science. This course offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human development throughout the life cycle, with particular emphasis on enhancing growth and development. Students will examine how early brain and child development are linked to lifelong learning, health, and well-being, and will develop child-care and human-relationship skills through practical experience in a community setting. This course also refines students’ skills used in researching and investigating issues related to human growth and development.

This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.

This course examines the global challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future, focusing on current issues that illustrate these challenges. Students will investigate a range of topics, including cultural, economic, and geopolitical relationships, regional disparities in the abil- ity to meet basic human needs, and protection of the natural environment. Students will use geotechnologies and skills of geographic inquiry and analysis to develop and communicate balanced opinions about the complex issues facing Canada and a world that is interdependent and constantly changing.

This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.
